From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Topeka is the search term with the most significant growth over the past week on the morning of April 6.

Searches for the name of the Kansas, USA city skyrocketed when Google changed its name to Topeka as an April Fools Joke. Google's prank referenced the city's recent name change to "Google" in the hope of enticing the internet giant to select them for their ultra-high-speed broadband project trial.

The Polish term for "Easter Greetings", "?yczenia wielkanocne" is in second place on the Google Insights list ahead of "Happy Easter." "Easter" is also trending at number seven.

American singer Erykah Badu caused a stir last week when she stripped naked - in the Dallas location where John F. Kennedy was shot dead - for a music video. Her name is trending in fourth position on Google Insights.

The name of Ricky Martin has also increased in popularity over the past week. After years of speculation, the Puerto Rican pop singer finally revealed that he was homosexual in a March 29 blog post.

Apple's newest gadget, the iPad, is in the charts at number six. The device became available in the USA on April 3, selling 300,000 units on the first day of release.
