From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The name of American socialite and party organizer Rachel Uchitel is getting a heavy workout on Google's search engine and in gossip tabloids across the globe on December 1.

If you are to believe the tabloids, Uchitel has been accused of being romantically involved with professional golfer Tiger Woods and is supposedly the cause of a fight between Tiger Woods and his wife that lead to Woods' November 27 car crash.

Rachel Uchitel and Tiger Woods both vehemently deny the claims, but that has not stopped a wave of people heading to Google to search for the names of both celebrities.

The name of America's first lady has dropped one place in Google Insight's list of trending topics, but people seem to be drawn to searching Google Images for the picture of an ape superimposed over the face of Michelle Obama.

The search terms with the most significant growth worldwide in the last seven days as measured by Google Insights, recorded on December 1 at 9:30 AM GMT are:

1. rachel uchitel (Breakout*)
2. michelle obama (+3,950%)
3. tiger woods (+2,550%)
4. gran hermano (+160%)
5. google wave (+150%)
6. black friday (+90%)
7. best buy (+80%)
8. kohls (+70%)
9. walmart (+60%)
10. paranormal activity (+50%)

*Breakout defines a search term that has experienced a change in growth greater than 5000 percent.
