The author, Sue Townsend, is writing the script herself, and the series might not make comfortable viewing for the Prime Minister. Adrian's wife, Pandora, is a Blair babe MP and the book takes a wry look at New Labour.
The adaptation will be filmed by Tiger Aspect, an independent production company, and looks certain to find a home at the BBC. Peter Salmon, controller of BBC1, is a huge fan of the Adrian Mole books. Colleagues say that Mr Salmon thinks the book a modern classic that takes a delicious side swipes at politicians and contemporary culture.
The BBC would not confirm it has given the go-ahead, but it is understood the deal with Tiger Aspect is near completion and the series will be screened before the next election.
