From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The UK has recorded 16,982 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to new government data  — an increase from the 16,717 announced the previous day.

The number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test was 67, down from 150 the previous day.

The announcement comes after it was confirmed yesterday that there have now been 58,500 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The numbers of patients being admitted to hospitals has also reportedly increased, with 792 people taken in on Thursday compared to 513 seven days earlier.

It comes as new measures to stem the spread of the virus come into effect in regions across the country.

In London, parts of Essex and York, the weekend has seen a new range of restrictions and guidelines be introduced after the introduction of tier 2 lockdown measures. The change in rules, which come with guidance to avoid unnecessary use of public transport, rule out household mixing indoors.

Meanwhile in the north of the country parts of Lancashire  will join Merseyside to be placed in a tier three local lockdown, which further limits household mixing and curtails the sale of alcohol for hospitality businesses.
