Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

THE CHART-TOPPING dance music star Fatboy Slim, aka Norman Cook, won three prizes at the MTV awards in the Metropolitan Opera House, New York.

His video for "Praise You" won two production awards, including best direction, and was deemed best break-through video. While he was feted, his wife, Zoe Ball, stayed in London after announcing she was to take a break from her career to start a family.

Her husband's prize-winning performance was eclipsed only by Lauryn Hill, whose video for "Doo Wop (That Thing)" earned four awards.

Ricky Martin's video for "Livin' La Vida Loca" and Korn's "Freak on a Leash" video each won two awards, and Madonna picked up an award for her comic dance in the Austin Powers theme tune, "Beautiful Stranger".

The ceremony was hosted by the US comic Chris Rock. The 13-year-old British singer Charlotte Church, dubbed Opera Spice, helped to present the awards, with Sir Paul McCartney and David Bowie.
