From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A FARMER was being questioned yesterday after a suspected burglar was shot dead and another seriously injured at his isolated farmhouse.

The farmer, named by neighbours as bachelor Tony Martin, 54, was being held at King's Lynn police station after the incident at his dilapidated farmhouse at Bleak House, Emneth, Norfolk, late on Friday.

Police said he was being questioned in connection with murder and attempted murder after being arrested at a hotel in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, early on Saturday.

The victims were believed to be in their 20s and from outside the Norfolk area. The dead man, aged 26, was found in the farmer's garden. Police said they believed he had been trying to burgle the cottage when he was discovered.

The injured man was under arrest at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn, where he was being treated for gunshot wounds to the leg.

A third man was arrested in Emneth and was being questioned at King's Lynn police station.

Police were examining a firearm seized at the scene and were carrying out forensic examinations in and around the two-storey farmhouse.
