Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Mikhail Gershkovich came to U.N. headquarters with his wife and daughter at the invitation of U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield on Wednesday to spotlight his sonās nearly six months in a Russian prison on charges of espionage, which the Journalās lawyers call āpatently false.ā
Their appearance came a day after the paper's lawyers asked the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to urgently issue an opinion that Evan has been arbitrarily detained by Russia on the false charges. The request says āRussia has failed to produce a shred of evidence in support of its accusationsā since the 31-year-old journalist was arrested on March 29 on a reporting trip to the city of Yekaterinburg, almost 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) east of Moscow.
Mikhail Gershkovich said Evan āis strong, but the past several months have been a nightmare for our family.ā
His wife, Ella Milman, echoed the difficulties for the family but said they have been able to send letters back and forth to Evan āand it gives me comfort to see how strong he is.ā
āWe are glad heās kept his sense of humor ā teasing me that the prison food reminds him of my cooking,ā she told U.N. correspondents.
Danielle Gershkovich, Evanās sister, said the family should be planning for his birthday next month. āInstead, we are here to remind the world that Evan is innocent and journalism is not a crime,ā she said.
āWe ask that world leaders help find a solution to secure Evanās release,ā she said. āIf this can happen to my brother, it can happen to any journalist trying to report the news.ā
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield urged all U.N. member nations āto join this call for Evanās release, and the release of all those who have been wrongfully detained.ā
She said the United States āwill not restā until Evan, Paul Whelan, who is serving a 16-year sentence on an espionage conviction that both he and Washington dispute, and all other wrongfully detained Americans āare home safe and sound.ā
āAnd we urge the international community and the United Nations to stand with us,ā the U.S. ambassador said.
