Your support makes all the difference.Yesterday, a new university opened in one of the most economically depressed parts of Europe – the North-west of England. Finally, the residents of border towns such as Carlisle and a rural area such as the Lake District get a university. The hope is that the existence of the University of Cumbria will help to regenerate the region, give its young people qualifications and keep them living locally. We welcome the new institution and wish it well. To survive, it needs to establish an identity distinct from the University of Lancaster's – and the signs are that it knows this.
