From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

SAVO MILOSEVIC, the former Aston Villa striker, set Yugoslavia on their way to a 3-0 win over Nigeria in a World Cup warm-up match in Belgrade last night.

Milosevic, who joined Real Zaragoza for pounds 3.5m earlier this month, put Yugoslavia in front on the stroke of half-time with a diving header.

Real Madrid's Pedrag Mijatovic scored the second after a dreadful error by the Nigerian goalkeeper. Abiodun Baruwa pushed the ball out too far and allowed Mijatovic to steal it off him and guide the ball in after 61 minutes.

Eleven minutes later, Darko Kovacevic beat the offside trap, got the better of a defender and fired the ball home.

The Brazilian striker Romario missed training yesterday with a persistent calf injury, raising fears that he might not be fit for their opening match of the World Cup finals against Scotland on 10 June.

"I don't know how serious his injury is, I'm not a doctor," Mario Zagallo, the Brazilian coach said. "All I can tell you is its too early to make any kind of decision."
