THOUSANDS OF people lost their homes and crops were damaged yesterday as a severe cyclonic storm with heavy rains hit eastern India.

About 10,000 huts were destroyed, 20,000 trees uprooted and power and telecommunication links snapped as winds of 50 to 65mph hit coastal areas of Digha, Contai, Tamluk and Haldia in West Bengal.
