Close call for Netanyahu

The coalition of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, managed only a tie against an opposition no-confidence motion, reflecting the government's precarious political situation.

The former foreign minister David Levy voted with the opposition, as did four of the five members of his Gesher faction, cementing their break with the coalition after Mr Levy resigned last week. The 54-54 tie in the 120-seat parliament fell short of the absolute majority of 61 needed to topple the government. Mr Netanyahu said he was satisfied that the government had survived. - AP, Jerusalem
