Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A MEXICAN woman drowned yesterday trying to swim the English Channel.
The 41-year-old got into difficulties eight miles off the coast of Dove - more than a third of the way into the 21-mile crossing to France.
Ted Ingham, a watch officer for Dover Coastguards, said the service received a call for help at 11am from her escort boat, the Mary Mayne, which is used by the Channel Swimmers' Association.
He said: "We got a call saying she had got into difficulty. Dover lifeboat got to her in 20 minutes and brought her back to shore. An ambulance was waiting at the docks for her, but paramedics pronounced her dead on arrival at the shore."
The woman was one of four swimmers who set off separately from Dover. The other three swimmers were still attempting to complete the challenge, but were said to be fine.
A post mortem is due to be carried out today.
