Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Compact, elegant and timeless the new Fiat Barchetta is a two- seater convertible that exudes the effortless class that only the Italians seem to achieve. Destined to become an instant classic the Barchetta evokes the golden age of motoring, touring Europe with the wind in your hair and the world at your command.

And this superbly-crafted machine could be yours. To enter our Barchetta competition, all you have to do is collect 12 differently numbered tokens from The Independent and the Independent On Sunday. Your total of 12 tokens must include at least one from the Independent On Sunday.

In case you have missed any of the Tokens we have published so far, we are giving you a special Token 1 to 4 so you can start your collection today. Token 5 will apear in tomorrow's Independent. Separately dated starter and bonus tokens will count towards your total of 12. We will give details of how to enter later.

The Barchetta really is something special. The 1747cc 16-valve twin- cam engine delivers 130bhp and the car will accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just over eight seconds. The power-assisted steering is swift and precise, the gearing quick and consistent and the overall ride is reassuringly shudder free.

The designers boast that with their "little boat" they have brought "the outside inside" - the inside of the door is painted the same colour as the exterior and tones beautifully with the interior trim.

The seats are bolstered to give firm, sure support, the steering wheel is height adjustable and the instruments are laid out so as to be both aesthetically pleasing and highly practical.

Though the inside sits comfortably in the late 1990s, external features such as the ridge above the wheel arches are decidedly retro. Even the door handle acknowledges past classic design. An aluminium strip is set flush to the door next to an aluminium button - press the button and the strip flips out to do service as a handle.

Comparisons are often odious but Fiat can take a great deal of comfort from the fact that motoring writers have likened the Barchetta to the current Lotus Elan, a car with immaculate handling and dependable grip.

The Barchetta, which goes on sale here in the Summer, will only be produced as a left-hand drive model - a minor drawback considering the pure pleasure of driving it and the satisfaction of attracting admiring glances wherever you go.

And if owning it tempts you to a Grand Tour, then the left-hand drive will not only be practical but add that final touch of Euro-class to a great adventure.
