bSmith & Nephew 546.5p (up 11.5p, 2.2 per cent). Posts strong fourth- quarter results and a bullish outlook statement for 2005.

bHays 126.25p (up 2.25p, 1.8 per cent). Solid results from its rival Vedior excite investors.

bBritish Vita 347p (up 27p, 8.4 per cent). Texas Pacific, the US venture capital giant, bids 335p a share for the chemicals group.

bHHG 71p (up 5.25p, 7.9 per cent). Confirms it has received a takeover approach.

bGaming Corp 3.97p (up 0.72p, 22.2 per cent). Recent director share buying continues to drive the stock higher.

bFirestone Diamonds 146.5p (up 26.5p, 22.1 per cent). Issues a bullish drilling update from its Orapa project in Botswana.

bIndependent International 24.25p (up 3p, 14.1 per cent). Gets $340,000 worth of new work.

bMoss Brothers 131p (up 5p, 3.9 per cent). Says it is on track to meet market forecasts for the full year.

bPolaron 191.5p (up 6p, 3.2 per cent). Secures pounds 1.3m from asset sales and issues an in-line trading statement.

bCaffe Nero 135.5p (up 12p, 9.8 per cent). Brokers upgrade after forecast busting interim results from the coffee bars operator.

nRio Tinto 1,655p (down 30p, 1.8 per cent). Profit-taking after pleasing full-year results at the mining giant.

nShell 471.75p (down 8.25p, 1.7 per cent). Downgrades its reserves forecast again but posts record profits.

nDimension Data 40p (down 2p, 4.8 per cent). Warns that its operating profits in 2005 will be $2m (pounds 1m) lower than previously indicated.

nCarbo 6p (down 2.25p, 27.3 per cent). Investors worry about the company's future after it recently warned that it was facing a cash crunch.

nBioFocus 100p (down 13.5p, 11.9 per cent). Sees its full-year results in line with expectations.

nWhitehead Mann 56p (down 6.5p, 10.4 per cent). Altium Securities urges investors to exit the stock after Wednesday's profits warning.
