Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will last a total of just four and a half weeks, but thanks to Cisco’s involvement, a legacy of business growth and educational excellence will endure for decades.

Of the great British Olympic and Paralympic athletes and digital entrepreneurs of tomorrow, many are still at school today. It is in the classroom that Cisco is working hard to develop programs that will inspire the kids of the UK about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), which are the basis of a successful high-tech and digital sector in the UK.

Cisco’s involvement with STEM has three key parts:

The “Out of the Blocks” maths and science series 2012

As part of the London 2012 Education programme, “Get Set” Out of the Blocks, offers free Key Stage 4 maths and science resources for all state-funded UK secondary schools. By taking London 2012 as its inspiration, Cisco and its partners are making STEM learning fun while keeping it tied to the syllabus and showcasing the opportunities that these skills can lead to.

The STEMNet Challenges

This series of challenges to schools and other organisations will inspire the next generation of STEM professionals. Challenge 6 asked students to help raise the profile of top Paralympian, Rachel Morris, by designing an interesting, informative and educational website. While Challenge 10, gives children a chance to further their learning in Science and Maths.

Cisco Networking Academy

The Cisco Networking Academy program is the world’s largest virtual classroom that has already trained over four million students to design, build, troubleshoot and secure computer networks for increased access to career opportunities.

There are now more than 600 Cisco Networking Academies in the UK with some 4,000 East London students on route to exciting new jobs in the IT industry.

So when the closing ceremony ends and the last spectators drift away from the Olympic stadium, the 30th Olympic and Paralympic Games will finally come to an end. But it will be anything but the end of Cisco’s bigger challenge of building on a lasting legacy of regeneration and prosperity across the UK.

Are your students ready?
