Greene King suffers bid setback
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The withdrawal is a blow for Greene King, whose bid finally closes on Friday. Ten days ago it said it had acceptances for 47.2 per cent of Morland's equity. Yesterday that figure was cut to 46 per cent.
When Greene King launched the bid it had secured the support of the Whitbread Investment Company and its 43.5 per cent stake.
However, Greene King needs the backing of only one undecided institutional shareholder to win on Friday. A circular sent out yesterday by Robert Fleming, Greene King's financial adviser, said acceptance of Greene King shares would provide a threefold increase in dividends.
Fleming also pointed out that Greene King's share price has risen during the bid, despite an average 11 per cent fall in regional brewers' shares and a 10 per cent fall in the FT-SE 100 index.
