Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

JANE BARKER, finance director of the Stock Exchange, is being tipped as a possible late contender to be its chief executive, writes David Hellier.

The Stock Exchange recently told the headhunting firm Heidrich Struggles to rethink after months of fruitless searching for an external candidate suitable to lead the exchange into a new era.

Ms Barker is generally perceived to be first-rate and it is believed that some of the exchange's appointment committee would now be more prepared to consider an internal candidate to replace Peter Rawlins. He resigned last March after the fiasco over Taurus, the paperless share settlement system.

Ms Barker, who declined to comment on the job, has told friends that she is undecided about whether to put herself forward. She is afraid that if she gets the post it will have been almost 'by default'.

City observers have noted that the Stock Exchange, following the Taurus debacle, has been left with little definite idea of its role. This has been one of the reasons behind its difficulty in finding a suitable replacement for Mr Rawlins. Ms Barker joined the exchange as chief financial officer in 1990, having been poached from CT Bowring.
