BBB Design Group, the graphic designer, publisher and marketing specialist, achieved a turnaround from pounds 165,000 taxable loss to pounds 43,000 pre-tax profit in the six months to 31 October. Turnover improved to pounds 956,000 ( pounds 874,000). Earnings per share are 0.52p (LPS 1.99p). There is no dividend.

British Thornton Holdings, educational furniture maker and contract packaging group with interests in warehousing and distribution, more than trebled pre-tax profits from pounds 301,000 to pounds 1.15m in the six months to 31 October. Turnover rose to pounds 4.9m ( pounds 4.1m). Earnings per share are 6.6p (2p). Interim dividend is 2.5p.

EFM Japan Trust, the investment trust, was unable to pay a dividend for the half-year period to 30 November following pounds 23,000 taxable loss (profit pounds 73,000). Net asset value per share declined 11 per cent to 140.17p (157.55p).

Fletcher King, the commercial estate agent, surveyor and construction manager, marginally improved pre-tax profits to pounds 74,000 ( pounds 71,000) in the six months to 31 October, despite an 8 per cent fall in turnover to pounds 2.3m. Earnings per share were unchanged at 0.5p. The interim dividend is held at 0.5p.

Crestacare, one of the largest nursing home operators, has agreed to buy Ashcroft Nursing Home, based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, for a little under pounds 1.1m.

Hays, the business services group, says its French contract distribution division has won five new contracts with a collective annual turnover more than pounds 9m.
