RJR Nabisco, owner of the US tobacco company RJ Reynolds, has raised its cigarette prices by three cents a packet, prompting similar increases by its rivals Philip Morris and the BAT Industries subsidiary Brown & Williamson.
RJR said the rise was prompted by higher expenses, but one analyst commented that the group needed the money for promoting its cigarettes. Sales of Winston and Salem, its flagship brands, have slumped recently, allowing Brown & Williamson's GPC brand to overtake Winston as America's second most popular cigarette.
