China is stepping up attempts to get its runaway inflation, which was running at 21 per cent in April, under control. Inspectors will check price controls throughout the country next month and report back to the State Council. The biggest factor in price increases in April was a 4 per cent monthly increase in the cost of grain. Wages of Chinese town- dwellers increased by 27 per cent in the first four months of 1995 compared with the same period in 1994.
