Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Bank mortgage lending drops

Gross mortgage lending by large British banks fell 11 per cent last month to pounds 1.4bn, according to the British Bankers' Association. But the BBA said it was impossible to tell whether this was a seasonal effect.

'These reductions were similar to those experienced by the building societies. It is too soon, however, to attribute this to April's changes to MIRAS and tax increases,' Lord Inchyra, the BBA's director general, said. He said the downturn may might have reflected a rush in March to pick up cheap fixed- rate mortgages.

Balfour barrage

A joint venture between Balfour Beatty, the construction arm of BICC, and Costain has won a pounds 93m, four-year contract to build a 1,100-metre barrage across Cardiff Bay as part of a redevelopment of the area.

Tapie writ

Credit Lyonnais said it received a writ from the businessman Bernard Tapie, who is contesting demands that he pay off Fr450m ( pounds 55m) of debt to the bank by Thursday.

France's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 12.3 per cent in April from 12.2 per cent in March.

Restrictions imposed on the activities of foreign banks operating in Russia should be lifted by next week, the central bank governor Viktor Guerachtchenko said.

Bond IQ

Australia's best-known entrepreneur of the 1980s, Alan Bond, now has an IQ of 108, far below the level to be expected of someone who headed one of the nation's biggest business empires, a court in Perth heard yesterday. The evidence came on the fourth day of a hearing in which Mr Bond's lawyers are seeking to delay fraud proceedings against him.
