Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

NATIONAL POWER LOSES MARKET SHARE

National Power's interim results, to be announced later this month, are expected to show that its share of the electricity generating market has dropped to one- third from almost a half when the industry was privatised.

The fall - which has come much earlier than expected because of the acceleration of nuclear power and increased use of natural gas - is encouraging National Power to speed up its expansion into overseas markets.

STORMONT DEALERS SOLD

Touche Ross, administrative receiver of Stormont Engineering, has sold Ford car and Iveco dealerships within the Stormont group for an undisclosed sum to a firm connected with Hancock Ford of Horsham. Ford dealerships at Skipton, Yorkshire, and a Citroen dealership in Huddersfield are not included in the deal.

AIRBUS CANCELLATION

The Sri Lankan government is to cancel the remainder of a contract with Airbus Industrie to purchase five A340-300s worth dollars 590m, according to the Sri Lankan Sunday Times. It said the World Bank had been informed.

BURGER MOVES

The Compass Group will operate Burger King restaurants in areas including railway stations and workplaces in the UK and some European countries, replacing the existing Casey Jones brand.
