Bunhill: Wong Sing Jones
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.AND TO finish, a happy story. Opening a shop called Wong Sing Jones in the depth of the recession in London's hard-hit Portobello Road looked like foolhardiness verging on commercial suicide, especially as WSJ specialises in foreign products chosen for 'cultural value and uniqueness'.
An initial suspicion of trendiness is confirmed by a list of the shop's best-sellers, which include those aluminium clamp-on lights pretentiously called New York Loft Lamps, and the new Vitamin C wonder EmergenC - the alleged favourite of super-model Cindy Crawford. The whole thing turns into farce with Carmex, a lip salve mixed by a nonagenarian in upstate New York according to a formula he first perfected in the 1930s Depression.
But do not mock. WSJ has flourished and is now opening a second branch. But then one of the partners in the emporium is Sophie Conran, daughter of the redoubtable Sir Terence, who has clearly inherited her father's flair for profitable trend-anticipation.
