From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

THE AIRLINE tycoon Richard Branson is bidding to run five hotels owned by Welsh Water, the sewerage and water supply company, writes Robert Cole.

Welsh Water had planned to give the management of the hotels - which do not fit with its utilities business - to Resort Hotels. But the deal was abandoned when trading in Resort shares was suspended. The accountant Ernst & Young has since been called in to investigate its accounts.

Mr Branson's travel agent company Voyager is vying with Jarvis Hotels and another concern, thought to be Mount Charlotte Hotels, for the management contract.

Jarvis was a formed when John Jarvis, the former chief of Hilton International, led a buyout of Embassy Hotels from the food and drinks group Allied-Lyons.

It owns 43 hotels but has earned a reputation for managing hotels owned by banks or other institutions which have repossesed properties. Jarvis, a venture capital funded unquoted company, is also planning to float on the Stock Exchange.
