British Aerospace said last night it had won an order worth pounds 425m for more than 30 Hawk aircraft from Australia. The deal was agreed after Australian Prime Minister John Howard visited BAe's Warton factory in northern England last week. British Defence Minister George Robertson said the Government was "proud, and extremely pleased that the Commonwealth of Australia has selected the Hawk to meet the Royal Australian Air Force's lead-in fighter requirement". British Aerospace was selected as the preferred candidate for the order last November and the deal will be signed shortly.
