US STOCKS rose for the first time in four days as General Electric reversed the gloomy trend of the past month by announcing that earnings would be in line with expectations. The Dow Jones closed up 1.47 per cent at 8,823.30.
Financial services stocks gained after an announcement by Citigroup - the newly formed financial giant that is wrestling to integrate its businesses - that it would cut 6 per cent of its global workforce, and take a restructuring charge of $900m.
