LEADING SHARES closed 2.2 per cent higher, buoyed by weaker-than- expected US jobs data and as insurance stocks surged on hopes of takeover and merger action. The FTSE 100 closed up 136.5 points at 6,332.1. The FTSE 250 closed at a record high of 6,122.4 as computer stocks extended gains

News that NatWest plans to acquire Legal & General prompted investors to start guessing which insurer was the next bid target. Norwich Union, CGU, and Prudential all rose as much as 5.4 per cent. Market Report, page 21
