From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A BRITON has been shot dead in an armed robbery in Nigeria while working on a construction project, it emerged yesterday, writes Ian Burrell.

The Foreign Office last night confirmed that the dead man was Mark Davey, 34, a married man with children. Mr Davey, from Norfolk, was a sub-contractor for the Mobil oil company.

He had been working as a pipeline fitter on a government water scheme in Eket, in the east of the country, when he was killed during the robbery which took place early on Thursday morning. Other British workers on the project have returned home amid fears for their safety in the West African republic.

Anne Macro, a spokesperson at the British Consulate in Lagos, said: "Details are very sketchy, but we can confirm that he was a British worker on a project at Eket. We are told he was shot in some kind of armed robbery on Thursday."

Foreign Office officials are liaising with Mr Davey's employers in Nigeria to fly his body back to Britain early this week.
