Britain to act against bull bars

Britain will take unilateral action against "bull bars" mounted on motor vehicles if the European Union fails to act, Gavin Strang, the transport minister, disclosed yesterday.

Dr Strang, speaking in the Commons, rejected Tory warnings that a unilateral ban on the bars would be illegal and announced: "If we can't get European action, we will take national action." His disclosure came after Paul Flynn, Labour MP for Newport West and a long-standing campaigner against the bars, warned that they "concentrate and multiply the force of a collision, often at the level of a child's head or vital organs".
