From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Travel firms are making their customers use premium-rate phone lines when they want to make a complaint.

Research by Which? this week revealed that seven out of 10 firms use expensive numbers for their complaints and customer lines.

They included 24 airlines, such as Ryanair, Monarch Airlines, FlyBe, KLM, Aer Lingus and Lufthansa, which typically use 0871 numbers costing at least 10p a minute from a landline but considerably more from a mobile.

The worst example uncovered was Jet2.com which used a 09 premium-rate number for its general enquiries line – at a cost of 60p a minute! After it was named and shamed the airline agreed to scrap its 09 number but other high-charge numbers remain.

Which? is urging the Government to end the rip-off call charges and force firms to offer a basic-rate number for all.
