Boiler scrappage scheme hits its target

The Government's boiler scrappage scheme – where people are given vouchers towards the cost of replacing their old unit with an energy-efficient "A-rated" one – has reached its target of 125,000 households in double quick time.

As a result, the scheme, launched in January, is closed to new applicants. Worth £400 to boiler buyers, it has proved a hit with energy and cost-conscious householders. "The scheme is already helping people cut down on fuel bills. An A-rated, energy-efficient boiler can help save around £200 a year off fuel bills and reduce emissions," said Lord Hunt, the Energy minister. "The scheme has also provided a much- needed boost to England's plumbers and boiler manufacturers, helping to sustain work for the 130,000 installers and up to 25 UK- based boiler makers throughout the economic recovery."

But one provider, nPower, says that despite the vouchers all being issued it will continue to offer £400 off a new boiler: "There are still around four million households with G-rated boilers in the UK, which is why we are pledging to continue nPower's boiler-scrappage scheme," said Kevin Miles, chief executive of nPower Retail. To qualify for the discount, householders must have a boiler that is over 10 years old.
