Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Barclays customers offered a TV bundle beauty parade
Football fans who are customers of Barclays can now compare and switch their TV and internet bundles, potentially saving money and receiving cashback, by logging into their internet banking.
The bank has linked with Simplifydigital.co.uk to offer a free comparison service to all online banking customers through Barclays SmartSpend. On top of that, there's an extra £20 cashback, or £25 if you are a Blue Rewards customer, when you switch.
Banks dangle perks, but students must stick to basics
The big banks have now all released details of their new student accounts, ahead of next Thursday's A-level results day. In terms of additional perks, Santander once again leads the pack with its offer of a free four- year 16-25 Railcard.
The next best incentive comes from RBS/NatWest with its free four-year National Express Young Persons Coachcard.
However, you shouldn't choose an account based on the gimmicks and giveaways. Instead, look closely at the charges, especially if you're likely to spend a lot of time in the red, to see which may be the most cost-effective for you.
"An interest-free overdraft is the most valuable perk offered, but bear in mind that you may not necessarily be offered the maximum overdraft for the maximum amount cited," warns David Black of DJB Research.
He advises new students to arrange overdrafts in advance, as unauthorised overdrafts, if permitted, can prove very expensive and you may be charged a fee if a transaction is not honoured.
He also advises students to think again about the credit cards offered. "You'll have to repay any borrowings, so just because credit is available, it doesn't mean you have to use it."
