Mortgage lenders continue to vie with each other to attract borrowers by offering discounted and fixed rates.

Stroud & Swindon Building Society offers a 2.5 per cent discount for one year for 95 per cent of loan-to-value (LTV). A two-year fixed rate of 6 per cent is available at 85 per cent LTV.

Centrebank, a division of Bank of Scotland, has 5.99 and 6.25 per cent mortgages fixed to January 1996 or 6.99 and 7.25 per cent until January 1998.

Portman Building Society has a one-year rate fixed at 3.99 per cent for up to 75 per cent of valuation. Two-year fixes are available at 5.5 per cent. A fee of pounds 250 applies.

Lambeth Building Society offers a first-year discount of 2 per cent, normally fixed at 7.75 per cent. For loans of 75 per cent or less the rate drops to 5.25 per cent.

Capital Home Loans has fixed rates ranging between 4.25 per cent until March 1995.
