BRITANNIA Building Society has cut the rates on its Capital Trust postal account, having maintained them since March. On pounds 2,000 deposits it offers a gross return of 6.7 per cent, on pounds 10,000 6.85 per cent and on pounds 25,000 7 per cent. Higher rates are still being offered by Birmingham Midshires - 6.75 per cent gross on pounds 500 and 7 per cent on pounds 10,000 deposits. Manchester offers a rate of 7.25 per cent on pounds 25,000 deposits. If no withdrawals are made during the first year, Manchester gives a bonus of 0.75 per cent.

Bristol & West has launched a one-year Bonus Bond, paying variable rates set at 6.3 per cent gross on pounds 5,000, 7.05 per cent on pounds 25,000 and 7.3 per cent on pounds 50,000. If the investment is kept in place for a second year there will be a bonus of 0.25 per cent interest.
