Woolwich Building Society has a three-year fixed-rate bond that pays gross annual interest of 8.6 per cent and a monthly rate of 8.28 per cent. Minimum investment is pounds 500.

Chelsea Building Society has boosted interest rates on its instant access Classic postal account. For investment balances of pounds 25,000, gross rates are up by 0.35 per cent to 6.35 per cent; for lesser amounts, up by 0.25 per cent to 6 per cent.
