Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The San Miguel Rich List includes people from all walks of life who stress the value of experiences over material possessions. There’s a playfulness to what many of them do — and few can have followed this path more creatively than maze maker Adrian Fisher.

“I made my first one in my father’s garden in Dorset when I was very young, and thought ‘this is interesting’,” he says. “Since then, I’ve done more than 700, all over the world.”

Do you, or someone you know, challenge others to experience more? If so, you could be a part of this year's San Miguel Rich List.*

They may be about getting lost, but for Adrian, mazes have been where he’s found his calling, creating challenges that are full of discovery and fun, from traditional hedgerow designs to bewildering mirror mazes, light chambers, escape rooms, secret panels, and giant turrets.

“Mazes are wonderful because they’re something you do together with people you care about — friends, family or a sweetheart,” he says.

“Everyone feels like a team, and spectacular things can happen. When I design a maze, it’s about people thinking ‘wow, I wasn’t expecting that’.”

Fisher has also just broken his ninth maze-making world record — this time for creating the world’s biggest hedge maze, in China.

“I’ve also recently worked at the Singapore Science Centre, where we created the biggest mirror maze in Asia,” he says.

“It’s humorous, whacky and fun. In America, they love corn mazes, and I’ve done more than 400. Then you’ve got Japan, Bali, Australia. I love the different cultures, and meeting so many interesting people.”

The curiosity he found when starting out in 1979 still burns. “I have six children and six grandchildren, and I always tell them ‘find out inside yourself what you’re most interested in, where your talent lies — and explore it',” says Adrian.

“Be true to that, and you can end up with the best job in the world. You can find happiness and harmony. You have to take risks, but you also have to follow your heart.”
