Sandra Bullock makes funny and inspiring speech about friend Sarah Paulson after 'crappy few weeks'

Sandra Bullock made her first public appearance following the death of her father and two dogs within a matter of weeks.

Attending the Elle Women in Hollywood gala on Monday, the Oscar-winning actress introduced one of the evening’s honourees, her friend and fellow Ocean’s 8 star Sarah Paulson.

Bullock admitted that the last few weeks had been difficult for her and, in her signature humour, she decided to ditch the nice speech she wrote for Paulson and instead apparently list the things she doesn’t like about her instead.

“I was going to write a nice speech about all the things I like about Sarah Paulson. Sarah Catharine Paulson, she likes when you use her middle name, or Powell-son, as my 5-year-old calls her,” the 54-year-old actress began.

“But it’s been a crappy few weeks. My dad died, both of my dogs died.”

Bullock’s dad, John W. Bullock, died on September 18 at age 93. Her boyfriend, photographer Bryan Randall, revealed the news on his Instagram account, alongside a photo of John sitting in a chair while holding up a sign that reads, “No Bulls*** Allowed.”

The actress continued: “You turn on the television or computer, and it’s endless tragedies. And it seems like more than ever now, if you have a vagina, you have to be a fighter as well.

“So I don’t feel nice. So I decided tonight I’m going to talk about all the things I don’t like about Sarah.”

Of course, Bullock’s list of things she didn’t like about Paulson were actually huge compliments and the hilarious actor filled the room with joy as she addressed Paulson’s relationship with her girlfriend Holland Taylor.

“I don’t like that her and Holland’s joy for life and each other reminds me that I need to be a better girlfriend,” Bullock joked.

“I don’t like that she’s the kind of person that after a long day of flying and fittings will sit in your hotel room after you believe she has nowhere else to go, when in fact she is fully aware that you’ve been stood up, and she doesn’t want you to be alone.”

The actor also shared how Paulson had been there for her when she had to say goodbye to her dog, Poppy.

“Just like I didn’t like the dozens upon dozens of roses with little white poppies intermingled in them, mere hours after I put my dog to sleep, whose name happens to be Poppy,” Bullock added.

“So if that is the type of person you want for your icon, then I think you have chosen well.”

Before her remarks were over, Bullock went on to mention an article she recently read that said one of the best things women can do for their health is to nurture their relationship with their female friends.

“They provide support systems that help each other deal with the stress and difficulties in life, physically,” she explained.

“This quality girlfriend time helps create more serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps combat depression and create a general feeling of well-being. We share from our souls with our sisters, our mothers, and evidently that is very good for our health.”

As she joined Bullock on stage, Paulson thanked her co-star for taking the time to attend the event, saying: “You being here tonight means so much to me, because I really do know how much you hate to leave the house.

“I do actually know what a big deal it is.”
