'It’s not helpful, and it’s not what’s important'

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The This Morning host has experienced intense scrutiny from the media for her appearance in the past but has never commented on it herself, which, she explains, is intentional.
“Yes, I very deliberately don’t talk about it,” the 38-year-old told The Sunday Times.
“Just because I don’t think it’s helpful to the conversation, for women generally. As long as you are healthy and happy, that’s really all that matters.”
Willoughby added that she doesn’t want to fortify an ongoing obsession surrounding the physical appearance of women in the public eye.
“On [This Morning] I’ve sat across the sofa from mums and dads who’ve lost children to anorexia, or their children are currently going through it, and they sit there and say, ‘It doesn’t help that there’s such a fascination with weight at the moment.’
“Everybody knows what leads to a healthy lifestyle, but it’s not up to me to give you a blow-by-blow account of what I’ve eaten that day. It’s not helpful, and it’s not what’s important.”
The mother-of-three expressed a similar sentiment in a statement given to the Mail Online in 2016 when she was asked to reveal the details of her fitness regime following the birth of her youngest child.
“A lot of women, and particularly celebrities, talk about this, and I think it is very unhelpful,” she responded.
“Everyone’s journey is individual. I don’t want to go on the record saying I did this or that, and then have other women read it and think they have to go and do the same.
"I’m sorry, I just don’t want to be a part of this conspiracy to make women feel pressured about their bodies.”
Later in the Sunday Times interview, Willoughby addressed rumours of a pay gap between her and her This Morning co-host, Phillip Schofield, which surfaced in 2017 and suggested she'd been given a £200,000 pay rise to rectify the balance.
While she chose not to clarify whether her salary is now on par with Schofield's, Willoughby explained that if there was a pay gap at one point, "it wasn’t just because I was a woman, that wasn’t what it was.
"I think it was that Phil had been there for such a long time. You know, the biggest feminist I know is Phil. The first person that will be standing up screaming from the rooftops would be him, and so it was never an issue.”
