From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Singer Bebe Rexha has hit back at online trolls who criticised her weight, with one person labelling her “tubby”.
On Thursday, the 29-year-old pop star shared a photograph on Instagram and Twitter of herself performing in Cannes, France. In the caption, she wrote: “Unapologetically me”.
While the posts elicited a flurry of kind messages from fans, they also prompted several cruel comments, including one on Instagram reading: “you’re gaining a lot of weight tubby”.
But the “Meant To Be” singer immediately shut the criticism down, accusing the trolls of “just trying to get attention” in a tweet.
In subsequent tweets, Rexha added: “I don’t give a two s**** about what people think about my weight. I care about what I think about my weight.
“To all the people tweeting mean things to me about my weight you just want a response and you will not get it.
“Unless you are completely perfect you have no f***in right to talk about anybody else’s body. The hate you breed that stems from Insecurity don’t look pretty on you [sic].”
Rexha has since been inundated with messages of support, including one from singer Demi Lovato, who commented on Instagram: “You are GORGEOUS, strong, authentic and an inspiration to me and so many.
“Thank you for being you you BEAUTIFUL, beautiful woman. I love you.”
