Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The 1999 Italian Festival is an unprecedented celebration of Italian culture taking place across the country until the end of this month. To mark the occasion the festival is offering Independent on Sunday readers the chance to win a fabulous Cagiva Cucciolo 125 scooter, worth pounds 2,500, plus five pairs of tickets to see one of the festival's most exciting music concerts - the Orchestra e Coro dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Rome, at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, 21 November. The academy, founded in the 16th century, is one of the oldest musical institutions in the world, with a long and illustrious history in Italian music. For this performance, Myung-Whun Chung will conduct L'Italiana in Algeri and Stabat Mater by Rossini, and Mille E Una Notte Da Pasolini, a suite for chorus and orchestra by the acclaimed contemporary composer Giorgio Battistelli.

The festival includes the first ever UK appearance of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Arena di Verona, who have exchanged their glorious Roman amphitheatre for Wembley Arena. There's a rare opportunity to take in some Italian theatre at the 14th International Playwriting festival in Croydon's Warehouse Theatre. Among several exhibitions, you can see the spectacular machines of the Renaissance engineers da Vinci and Brunelleschi in "The Art of Invention", an exhibition at the Science Museum in London.

For the chance to win the brand new Cagiva Cucciolo 125 motor scooter or a pair of tickets to the concert, answer the following three questions:

1) Where and when is Verdi's opera Nabucco set?

2) Which Italian film-maker directed Bicycle Thieves?

3) Which art movement is Boetti associated with?

Send your answers, with your name, address, and day-time phone number to: Italian Festival Competition, Culture, Independent on Sunday, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5DL, to arrive by Wednesday 17 November. The sender of the first correctly answered entry pulled from the hat after the closing date will win the scooter. Five runners-up will each receive a pair of tickets to the Orchestra and Choir of Saint Cecilia concert. No cash alternative. The editor's decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into. Usual competition rules apply. The results will be published next Sunday.
