Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Main claim

Fluffy anarchy, leaping toast motifs, cackling cameramen - that sort of malarky. As the new presenter of The Big Breakfast, apparently beating off competition from Caprice to Melanie Sykes, one Kelly Brook is famous before she's famous. Very. Sort of. Currently gracing the celebrity weeklies in peep-of-bra get-up, silver slingbacks and hairclips, young Kelly is all set to garner Denise van Outen-style spangly celebrity status, if she's lucky. Kelly's Big Breakfast job starts 1 February. And there you have the gist of it, readers.

Appearance

Page three on the catwalk. Linda Evangelista meets Sam Fox. Cindy Crawford meets Linda Lusardi.

Girl power

Miss Kelly Brook is just 18, is really called Kelly Parsons, and is a scaffolder's daughter who hails from Kent. "I come from an ordinary family and I had an average childhood," says Kelly. That's all the biog stuff out of the way, then.

Dawn chorus

On comes The Big Breakfast, that graveyard for the unwitty, the unflirty and unpretty; that springboard into panto, sweating Madonna interviews, and Babes in the Wood. The show that spawned Gaby Roslin, Chris Evans, Johnny Vaughan and uberladdette van Outen also, you may have now forgotten, once starred former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, she of the ooh-arr burr and the Gladiators past, and a sidekick who chattered nervously. And let us not forget Zoe Ball, she of the equally nervous, more gangly- legged wackiness approach. In came Denise, formerly a weather girl. In came Johnny, formerly a prisoner. Here's hoping our lucky teenage heroine will do herself proud.

Star turn

The search for the breakfast Scarlett O'Hara has been a long one, with MTV's Jenny McCarthy apparently in the running before our girl was said to have been chosen by Johnny himself. Kelly is already known for her Sure deodorant ads, and her presenter stints for the Granada Men and Motors channel, that well known feminist thinktank. "It annoys me that people are more interested in the way I look than in my acting," says Kelly, who commendably refused to pose topless at the beginning of her career.

Love's labours

Kelly's electrician boyfriend, Jimmy Peach, has apparently been given the heave-ho. Now Kelly is dating Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels actor Jason Statham. "It's quite a turn-on going out with a heart-throb," she comments.

Fame prospects

Girl band or celeb cookery show.
