Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A comedian has tweeted a photo of her own nipple to foil an apparent extortion attempt.

Whitney Cummings posted an Instagram story of herself eating fruit in the bath back in April, without realising that her nipple was in the frame.

After realising, she quickly deleted it, but she has since been contacted by a follower who said: "How much would it cost to not share this photo?"

In response, Cummings reposted the image to Twitter accompanied by the message: "If anyone is gonna make money or likes off my nipple, it's gonna be me. So here it all is, you foolish dorks."

She explained: “In April I accidentally posted an insta story that showed nipple. Once I realised, I deleted. The people who took screen grabs are trying to get money from me, some said they have offers to sell them, some are asking for money to not post the photo.

"They all must think I'm way more famous than I am, but they also must think I'm way more easily intimidated than I am."

Later she joked: “I’ll be honest, I stand by most of my nudes. Frankly I'm way more embarrassed by all the inspirational quotes I've screen grabbed."

The image has so far been liked more than 150,000 times, and shared more than 6,000 times.

Friends and colleagues also showed their support by sharing their own embarrassing photos.

Among them was comedian Tom Segura who tweeted an image of his own injured penis and wrote: "Just learned that some real jerks tried to extort my friend @WhitneyCummings with a stolen photo from her phone. Well here's one of mine. I accidentally put my peepee in a jacuzzi jet but it was a faulty light #IStandWithWhitney”.
