From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A pub landlord lost 13 stone in just eight months while still managing to eat a proper full English breakfast - by cutting out the excess fifty pints he was drinking every week and tweaking his lifestyle.

Adam Joy, 40, realised he needed to make a change in November 2017 after he found himself struggling to get up the stairs.

“I couldn't get up the stairs, there was even a time at Twickenham where I couldn't get up to the next floor to watch the game,” Joy recalled.

Determined to become healthy, the father-of-two from Dartford, Kent enlisted the help of his local Slimming World centre - and swapped his average seven pints of Stella for ice-filled glasses of gin.

To adhere to the new diet of high-protein, low-fat meals, Joy switched to leaner sausages for his grilled English breakfast and incorporated exercise into his daily routine.

The pub owner finishes each day with a high-protein milkshake and fruit, a diet that has successfully helped him transform his body and life.

Now, as a part-time weight loss consultant, Joy wants his clients and other people to know that change is possible - if it is done correctly and healthily.

"The message I want to get across to people is that fad diets did not change my weight, it's about long-term strategies," the father-of-two said, whose blood pressure has dropped significantly.

Joy has also transformed his pub, the Bird in Hand, into a healthier version - by launching healthy curry nights.

The pub owner also stocks 14 different gins - his new go-to drink.

And although he occasionally misses his “cheese and sausage rolls in the morning,” Joy wants others to be inspired to join their local weight loss centres, which he credits with helping keep him on track.

As for his goal now, Joy hopes to achieve a six-pack within six months.
