But, while most people’s gazes were seized by the star-studded line-up that included everyone from Nicole Kidman and Tom Hanks, to Jessica Chastain and Zendaya, others were quick to spot what is being deemed as seriously “sloppy” photo editing.
Shot by Annie Leibowitz, the cover for the 24th annual Hollywood issue sees star and producer of HBO’s Big Little Lies, Reese Witherspoon, given a prominent spot as she perches to the side of her A Wrinkle in Time co-star, Oprah Winfrey.
But upon closer inspection, eagle-eyed readers spotted that Witherspoon had been given an extra appendage.
In the image, Witherspoon’s legs elegantly crossover but if you take a closer look, you’ll spot what looks like another leg that goes straight down from her hip to the ground.
“I’m tryna figure out how many legs Reese Witherspoon’s got in here, it’s been bothering me for the last five minutes,” one person wrote on Twitter.
The potential blunder caught so much attention online that the actress responded to the controversy tweeting, “Well...I guess everybody knows now...I have 3 legs.
“I hope you can still accept me for who I am and I will never apologise for snuggling @Oprah. If you get the opportunity, I highly recommend it.”
However, Vanity Fair insists that Witherspoon’s third leg is nothing but a trick of the eye.
“While we would have loved the exclusive on @RWitherspoon’s three legs, unfortunately it’s just the lining of her dress,” they wrote on Twitter.
But, this wasn’t the only photoshop fail because Twitter users also pointed out that in a behind-the-scenes image from the shoot it looks like Winfrey has three hands.
In a separate photo, the actress and daytime talk show host has one hand on her hip and the other on her leg, but also a third wrapped around Witherspoon’s waist.
Following Witherspoon’s tweet, Winfrey addressed the error by replying: “I accept your 3d leg. As I know you accept my 3d hand.”
While Vanity Fair shooed the initial slip-up, the magazine accepted it had made a mistake this time round, adding: “As for @Oprah, how can we expect her to juggle it all with just two hands? (We are correcting this error online.)”
