The photos of the couple, taken in 2019, were captured a day after Chalamet and Depp promoted their Netflix movie The King at the Venice Film Festival - while the pair enjoyed time aboard a yacht in Capri, Italy.
At the time, the pictures sparked various memes, as well as suggestions that the couple had staged the photos for a PR stunt.
In a new interview with GQ, Chalamet recalled that he’d originally gone to bed happy that day, only to wake up feeling embarrassed.
“I went to bed that night thinking that was one of the best days of my life,” Chalamet said. “I was on this boat all day with someone I really loved, and closing my eyes, I was like, indisputably: ‘That was great.’
“And then waking up to all these pictures, and feeling embarrassed, and looking like a real nob? All pale? And then people are like: This is a PR stunt. A PR stunt?! Do you think I'd want to look like that in front of all of you?!”
The couple reportedly began dating in 2018, but broke up after a year of dating, with a May 2020 British Vogue feature referring to the 24-year-old as “currently single”.
While the Little Women actor shared the boat anecdote with GQ, the outlet reports that Chalamet “is serious about keeping his former relationship with Depp to himself.”
