Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

BUILT IN 1903 by a former missionary to Palestine, Haifa, in the village of Crawford near Lanark in Scotland, is a package of surprises. Not least of these is a detailed, full-size charcoal drawing of a cavalier on the dining-hall wall. Oak panelling, stained glass and original brass door-fittings have been carefully maintained. The sitting room has an oak and slate fireplace with another charcoal drawing set in a panel. It has four bedrooms and a newly fitted bathroom upstairs, and sits in almost three quarters of an acre of grounds with views to distant hills. For sale at pounds 115,000 through Slater Hogg & Howison (01698 286221).

CONVERTED FROM the banqueting rooms of a former public house in Shoreditch, north London, this loft-style house is surrounded by similar properties owned by artists and photographers. It was designed for the current owners in 1984 and adapted in 1990 by the Survey & Design Partnership. The entrance is a pair of galvanised doors set in a 14ft glass-brick wall, leading to a perforated-steel staircase and bridge floating over a study area, with a 25ft column radiator linking the two. There's also a garage on the ground floor. Depending on preference, there are two bedrooms, or one bedroom and a 23ft studio. The main 29ft bedroom has a free-standing bath in it. The sitting room is on the second floor along with the kitchen. The third floor has a conservatory and roof garden. For sale at pounds 500,000. Details from Hurford Salvi Carr (0171-250 1012).

POLISHED GRANITE, a variety of woods and hand-made Murano glass screens are all included in the construction of Studio One, a contemporary house in Stow cum Quy, near Cambridge. It has five bedrooms with remote- controlled satellite dish, 16-channel security system and automatically controlled entrance gates and garage door. It also boasts a kitchen with fitted everything, a heated garage, indoor swimming pool, games room, soundproof booth and sauna. The master bedroom suite includes a Jacuzzi. The guide price is pounds 450,000, details from Bidwells (01473 611644).
