Thomas Markle has defended his reputation and commented on his estrangement from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in a new documentary.

The television programme Thomas Markle: My Story, which is scheduled to air at 9pm on Channel 5 on Wednesday 22 January, was filmed at Markle’s home in Mexico in October 2019 over a six-day period.

In clips released by the broadcaster prior to the show’s airing, Markle speaks about his absence from the May 2018 royal wedding, the way in which he has been portrayed in the media and how he learned the news of his daughter’s pregnancy over the radio.

Addressing the fact that he was not present at his daughter’s nuptials to Prince Harry, the 75-year-old said he wishes to “apologise to the Queen and the royal family”.

The retired television lighting director affirmed his belief that some stories about him in the media have painted him in a negative light, saying that he wished to make the documentary, “because I want everyone to know that I’m not all the trashy things that are being said about me”.

“I want Harry and Meghan to see this video and know that this is not fair,” he said.

Markle said that in his opinion, it was “almost a joke” that he learned his daughter and her husband were expecting a baby over the radio, as opposed to hearing their news directly from them.

He added that there is a possibility he may never see Meghan and Prince Harry in person again.

“The last time they might see me is being lowered into the ground,” Markle said.

“I don’t think at this point they are thrilled to see me or want to talk to me.”

In October 2019, it was reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were taking legal action against the Mail on Sunday after the newspaper allegedly unlawfully published a letter written by Meghan.

Court documents claimed that the newspaper published a “private and confidential” letter the duchess wrote to her father during a “time of great personal anguish and distress”.

Schillings law firm also claimed that the Mail on Sunday printed only a portion of the letter, which “intentionally distorted or manipulated” its context in order to depict the duchess “negatively”.
