Bloom's (above) 90 Whitechapel High Street, London E1 (0171 247 6001). Jewish families and Brick Lane stallholders fight for salt beef, chopped liver, and other specialities. Unique. Average pounds 12.50.

Czech Club Czech & Slovak National House, 74 West End Lane, London NW6 (0171 372 5251). Britain's only Czech restaurant serves Eastern European comfort food (dumplings, veal, sauerkraut) at its best. A popular meeting place for ex-pat Czechs. Average pounds 12.50.

Royal China 3 Chelverton Road, London SW15 (0181 7880907). The best dim sum outside Chinatown. Average price pounds 12 (excl drink).

The Terrace Garden Le Meridian Hotel, 21 Piccadilly, London W1 (0171 465 1642). If you want to dine al fresco but the weather has different ideas, try the Terrace Garden - a domed conservatory serving beef and Yorkshire pudding. Set lunch from pounds 16.50.

Blue Elephant (above) 4-6 Fulham Broadway, London, SW6 (01273 699011). Palm trees, ponds, bamboo huts - perfect for a romantic lunch. The Thai food's good too. Set lunch pounds 14.50.

Black Chapati 12 Circus Parade, New England Road, Brighton BN1 (01273 699011). Anglo-Asian cuisine hits the south coast. Buffet lunch pounds 7.95 (vegetarian ) pounds 8.95 (non-vegetarian).

Brasserie Forty Four 44 The Calls, Leeds, West Yorkshire (01132 343232). Chic and cheerful in an old warehouse overlooking the river Aire. Sunday's "light and rapid" menu - gnocchi with tomatoes and olives, lemon and sweet pepper chicken etc - is delicious. Set lunch price pounds 7.50 (two course) pounds 11.25 (three course).

But `n' Ben Auchmithie, Tayside, Scotland (01241 877223) Popular family- run restaurant in stunning location. Set in two white cottages in old fishing village, offers cliff-top views and first-rate seafood. Average price pounds 20 (excl drink).

Fischer's Baslow Hall Calver Road, Baslow, Derbyshire (01246 583259). On a hill top, and serving Max Fischer's superb food. Exquisite. Set lunch price pounds 18.50 (excl drink).

Penmaenuchaf Hall Penmaenpool, Gwyned, Wales (01341 422129). A small, oak dining room and a first-rate chef. Try the Welsh lamb with minted ratatouille. Set lunch: pounds 12.95 (excluding drink).
