Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

`I have been to Mildenhall airbase and seen live captive space aliens ... I'll never forget it." So it's true; the little green men really have landed in Suffolk. This comes from an eyewitness report by an anonymous alien-spotter who lives near the military base. I found it while searching for alien activity in the alt.aliens.research and alt.aliens.visitors newsgroups.

The experience had scared the writer: "It's become risky for me to speak my mind on this subject. I fear I may be under observation by `Them'."

It was obviously no coincidence that Mildenhall is a US airbase and the alien creatures wore "strange green clothes" and had a "humanoid appearance". "Initially, I thought they were just ugly people with no dress sense," the writer continues, "but then I heard one of them speak with an American accent - and, as we all know, English with an American accent is the language of extraterrestrial life-forms."

What is also clear from flicking through these newsgroups is that almost all extraterrestrial sightings have an American connection. But with the film Independence Day still pulling in huge crowds in the States, it is not surprising that aliens have become so common there. One correspondent is convinced the Area 51 secret alien research base depicted in the film really exists in California. "Sounds like an urban, excuse me, rural myth," responds another alien expert. "Have you ever been there to see?" the first replies angrily. "I doubt it. I live not far from this base and some of us have known about it a while."

Things become even murkier when another writer suggests the US government has backed many of the alien movies. He claims it is part of a long-term disinformation campaign to make the American public believe that extraterrestrial life only exists on screen. Meanwhile, government scientists can carry on dissecting the captured aliens in their underground labs in peace and quiet.

However, if recent allegations that the US Navy shot down TWA Flight 800 prove true, the US government will be desperate for the public to believe aliens do exist. The theory doing the rounds in alt.aliens. visitors and alt.aliens.research is that a US Navy ship mistakenly identified the airliner as a flying saucer. It decided "to try and shoot down the flying saucer, knowing that it would sink to the bottom of the ocean and they could recover it at their leisure". But the saucer managed to evade the missile and "within a few seconds, the missile locked on to Flight 800 and destroyed it". Open and shut case
