Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Selma Blair has marked the end of a round of treatment for her multiple sclerosis with a celebratory photo of her newly shaved head.

In the photo, which the actress shared to Instagram, she is smiling as she prepares to leave her hospital room with the help of an Alinker walking bike.

According to the actress, the photo represents a “banner day” in her fight against MS.

She captioned the photo: “Today is a banner day. I am being discharged from the care of an incredible team of nurses and techs and a visionary doctor who believes in my healing as much as I do.

“This has been a process. And will continue to be one. I am immunocompromised for next three months at least. So no kisses please. I wanted to make sure any complications that might arise here were my private space. And we got through brilliantly.”

The 47-year-old also expressed her gratitude for the “love and support” she’s received while undergoing treatment, before concluding: “I see things so much more clearly now. And I am excited to share this journey when I am ready.

“For now I have recovery.”

Blair, who has been open about her battle with the neurological disease since she was diagnosed last August, hashtagged the photo #NewImmuneSystem and #WhoDis?.

Earlier in the day, Blair shared a photo of her and Jason Bleick's son Arthur Saint Bleick in honour of his eighth birthday. In the photo, Blair’s son carefully cuts her hair.

“Jason cut the cord and said he looked like me,” the actress captioned the photo. “And now my kid can cut his mum’s hair and make jokes and assure me just by being him that I am good enough.”

In a recent interview with People, the Legally Blonde actress said that her son called her “brave” after she was diagnosed with the disorder.

“He says: ‘Mommy’s not sick. Mommy’s brave,’” Blair said, before revealing that knowing her son is proud of her and doesn’t see her as an “embarrassment” is one of her “proudest moments”.
